PIANO SONATA NO. 2
VINTERDANSER
NUANCES DE LUMIÈRE

‘In my music, I am usually inclined to start out from a tiny core motif; a small musical cell, and then make it form the basis of a broadly laid out movement. That is the case in my Second Piano Sonata, which opens the programme on this album. In the second piece, the five-movement suite Vinterdanser (Winter Dances), I made extensive and frequent use of syncopated rhythms in the movements to achieve a danceable character. The third and final work is titled Nuances de Lumière (Shades of Light), which could just as easily have been Shades of Evening Light, as impressions and moods mostly are associated with late afternoon and early evening. The concept for this piece arose from a distant inspiration from French Impressionism, although this is not palpable in every movement, least of all in the third movement Dance of Shadows. Yet also in these two suites variation and development derive from minor motifs.’ – Svein Hundsnes
