FERDINAND PFOHL (1862–1949)
STRANDBILDER • SUITE ÉLÉGIAQUE • HAGBART
JAMINA GERL
‘Ferdinand Pfohl was one of the great music critics of Germany. He not only wrote reviews, biographies about Richard Wagner and Arthur Nikisch, but also had his own radio broadcasts, in which he talks about music with a lot of enthusiasm and expertise, very embellished and always with a wink of the eye. That really opened the door to his world for me. You notice the same theme in many of these piano pieces: this wit and humour that comes through and twinkling, even if the music is very melancholic or contemplative at times. His piano pieces are basically miniatures and very different in character – each is following a different mood. Personally, I find it difficult to compare his composition style to anything else. I think that he had quite an individual way, his own sound language, to express what he had in mind.’ – Jamina Gerl

About this Recording
Esteemed as one of Germany’s leading music critics, Ferdinand Pfohl (1862–1949) never lost a passion for composition that had been nurtured in Leipzig. He wrote highly individual works for his own instrument, the piano, conceiving cycles that reveal harmonic daring and sophistication, often evocative of developments in impressionism. As Strandbilder (‘Beach Pictures’) shows, he mastered tonal painting – while in the compositional unity of Suite élégiaque, Bohemian and Russian elements mingle with the influence of one of his great heroes, Grieg.
