BRUCKNER, A.: Symphony No. 7 (Stuttgart Radio Symphony, K. Sanderling) SWR19410CD
BRUCKNER, A.: Symphony No. 9 (Stuttgart Radio Symphony, Giulini) SWR19411CD

Sanderling’s interpretation of the Adagio is spacious but never seems unduly slow, the performance conveying both expressiveness and spirituality. The depth of tone of the violins is remarkable and the playing of the solo flute in the coda is as poignant as any performance I’ve ever heard.

Both symphonies enjoy superb recordings. Some faint background noise is occasionally apparent but it’s only the applause at the end that reminds one these are live performances. © 2018 Gramophone Read complete review on Gramophone

Sanderling’s choice of tempi are perfect for presenting the composer’s eloquent symphonic lines. There is that unique subtlety of tension and relaxation which delineates any successful Bruckner interpretation. As an obvious example, the first movement begins beautifully, the great opening theme presented with wonderful sonority, amid phrasing which encourages the melodic line to breath and grow. In the succeeding phase, the more angular rhythmic contours of the secondary material create an ideal balance as the extended symphonic plan unfolds built across its twenty-minute span. © 2018 MusicWeb International Read complete review
