MAYR, J.S.: Che originali / DONIZETTI, G.: Il Pigmalione [Operas] (Fondazione Donizetti, 2017) (Blu-ray, HD) DYN-57811

The Fondazione Donizetti’s brilliant decision to pair Mayr’s Che Originali! and Donizetti’s Pigmalione brings to light two works of historic importance.

The excellent cast is headed by the indefatigable Bruno de Simone as Don Febeo, described as a “fanatic amateur musician”. He is at odds with his daughter, Donna Aristea, sung by the outstanding mezzo-soprano Chiara Amaru, whose lovely clarity of tone and charismatic stage presence bring to mind Marilyn Horne.

The Orchestra of l’Accademia Teatro alla Scala plays these unfamiliar operas with brilliance and refinement under the direction of Gianluca Capuano. © 2019 American Record Guide Read complete review on American Record Guide

Richard Lawrence
Gramophone, October 2018

The cast is splendidly led by Bruno de Simone, a comedian not unlike Alessandro Corbelli. Chiara Amarù and Angela Nisi are well contrasted as the sisters, both vocally and in character, and Leonardo Cortellazzi makes a game Don Carolino.

The music is attractive, with some delicate writing for the woodwind. Gianluca Capuano conducts both operas with spirit. Well worth investigating. © 2018 Gramophone Read complete review on Gramophone
