Bernard Ringeissen gives a very brilliant account of the Etudes. The 1990 Naxos recording is very faithful, and at this bargain-basement price the attractions of the set are further enhanced by Le Festin d’Esope, also very impressive here.

The 25 variations cover an astonishing range, from funny tricks to swift will-o'-wisp filigree to immense chordal structures...These etudes are not just athletic events but also contain graceful melodies in interesting settings.
