SALIERI, ANTONIO
Axur, re d’Ormus (Axur, king of Ormus)

  • Antonio Salieri. Dramma tragicomico in five acts. 1787.
  • Libretto by Lorenzo Da Ponte, after the play Tarare by Beaumarchais.
  • First performance at the Burgtheater, Vienna, on 8th January 1788.

In origin intended as an Italian version of the successful Paris opera Tarare by Salieri, Axur, re d’Ormus reworked the Beaumarchais original. The opera, which ends in tragedy but includes comic elements, was very successful in Vienna and elsewhere in German-speaking countries, winning particular favour with the Emperor Joseph II.
