Sergey Taneyev’s music was acclaimed by some as a ‘model of pure style and sublime art’, but he was a loner whose supreme mastery of European Classical technique placed him outside the more nationalist trends of the day. The Violin Sonata in A minor is neo-Classical in its reserved and often song-like moods and expressions. It contrasts with the grand scale of the Piano Quintet in G minor in which the virtuoso nature of the piano writing reflects Taneyev’s own prowess, and the brilliant integration of the works’ themes cumulate into an overwhelming conclusion.

Violinist Boris Brovtsyn is a frequent guest at Les Grands Interprètes chamber music series in Geneva and Spectrum Concerts Berlin. He started to play the violin under the guidance of his grandfather, a student of Lev Tzeitlin and Abram Yampolsky. After graduating from the Moscow Tchaikovsky Conservatory, he made his UK debut with the BBC Philharmonic and relocated to London. He completed his studies with David Takeno at the Guildhall School of Music & Drama, and taught there himself from 2010 to 2016.
Eldar Nebolsin is a former student of the renowned Russian pianist and teacher Dmitri Bashkirov. He enjoys a busy international career as a soloist, recitalist and chamber-music player, appearing with conductors, orchestras and colleagues of international distinction. In 2005 he was unanimously awarded the Sviatoslav Richter Prize at the First International Piano Competition in Moscow, where he was also honoured with the special award for The Best Classical Concerto Performance.
Spectrum Concerts Berlin is considered one of Germany’s most significant voices in the world of chamber music. Critics have showered praise on the ensemble for years, both for their live performances at the Philharmonie’s Kammermusiksaal, and for their recordings.
