Liszt – Piano Favourites

‘Liszt continually modified and refined his works for piano in multiple versions. Notations made by virtuoso pianists Alexander Siloti (1863–1945) and Adolf von Henselt (1814–1889) reflected Liszt's performance practice, demonstrating to what extent his performances differed from the published scores. Carl Tausig, Moriz Rosenthal and Hans von Bülow followed Liszt’s path, and made their own versions of his and other composers’ works. Following these models, I recorded a number of the pieces on this album in my own arrangements, applying minor amendments to seek vitality and freshness in the works which we all know so well.’

‘Filipec is both a thoughtful musician and a fine player who ... brings a welcome sense of playfulness and fun to his project. Given the unbroken tradition of Liszt’s orchestral music in Hungary, Kollár and the Debrecen musicians are ideal companions for this repertoire.’

‘Filipec’s pianism lights up every one of the work’s virtues. His interpretation is constantly exciting, and the Liverpudlians play what must be unfamiliar repertoire with complete confidence. Alvaro Cassuto’s conducting of Braga-Santos’ music generally strikes me as unbeatable. Naxos’ sound is clean and natural. Maestro Cassuto’s liner notes are as illuminating as his conducting.’
