Die Theateredition has gained a significant position in the German-speaking market following a series of notable audiovisual releases. These include Peter Stein’s legendary staging of Goethe’s Faust with Bruno Ganz in the title role (the label’s best-selling title), the fascinating staging of Shakespeare’s Richard III by Thomas Ostermeier with the noted Lars Eidinger (Babylon Berlin) as Richard; and the 10-DVD box set Klassiker des Theaters.
Die Theateredition was founded in 2006 by renowned producer François Duplat. As the first audiovisual label for theatre and drama within the German-speaking market, its aim is to reflect the diversity of the modern classical drama scene. Maria Walburga Stürzer has been head of Die Theateredition since 2011, during which time she has developed the catalogue through the addition of numerous high-class theatre productions.
Die Theateredition joined the Naxos Music Group in 2018 with a mission to produce award-winning titles for an international market. Beyond the main market for the products – Germany, Austria, Switzerland – the label’s releases find an increasing international audience due to a lively worldwide exchange with theatres and directors abroad.
‘This Hamlet is a must-see.’ – Süddeutsche Zeitung
‘Graceful stunner.’ – nachtkritik.de
King Hamlet is dead. Poisoned by his brother Claudius who has married the king’s widow and has taken over the regiment in Denmark. Young prince Hamlet wants to avenge his father. This, however, drives the Prince more and more into isolation.
With Sandra Hüller as Hamlet, Johan Simons’ highly concentrated staging of Shakespeare’s classic play becomes a pleading for radical honesty.
Born in Berlin in 1976, Lars Eidinger studied at the prestigious Ernst Busch Academy of Dramatic Art in Berlin. During his studies he had a guest engagement at the Deutsches Theater Berlin for two years in productions that included Preparations for Immortality by Peter Handke (1997) and The Maid of Orleans by Friedrich Schiller (1998) under Jürgen Gosch’s direction.
Since 1999 he has been an ensemble member at the Berliner Schaubühne. His portrayals of Hamlet and Richard III in Thomas Ostermeier’s productions were internationally acclaimed and made him a formative actor of the Schaubühne.
Since 2005 Lars Eidinger has featured in numerous national and international cinema productions, including Goltzius & The Pelican Company (directed by Peter Greenaway, 2011), Clouds of Sils Maria (directed by Olivier Assayas, 2013), Familienfest (directed by Lars Kraume, 2015). He received the Preis der Deutschen Filmkritik for his role in TABU – Es ist die Seele ein Fremdes auf Erden and Home for the weekend in 2012, and was awarded the Grimme Prize for best actor for his role in Border Walk. Alongside this, he has acted in several TV series, including Polizeiruf 110 and Tatort.
Richard is hideous, deformed and full of hatred for the world. He exploits the ambitions of others for his own ends. With unscrupulous virtuosity he clears away every obstacle that lies in his path to becoming king. But even this triumph fails to heal the great insult nature has visited upon him. Alone at the apex of the English kingdom, he now turns his rage on his true nemesis – himself.
Richard III is one of Shakespeare’s earliest works, first performed around 1593. But until this day the title character with his unbridled, single-minded, gleefully exhibited amorality has lost none of his fascination.
Staged by Thomas Ostermeier at the Schaubühne Berlin this production is perfectly cast with a select team and a compelling Lars Eidinger as Richard.

During her 1980 stay in New York, in which she first rehearsed her celebrated Violin Phase to the music of Steve Reich, the only other recording playing in Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker’s studio was the Brandenburg Concertos by Johann Sebastian Bach. Thirty-five years later, De Keersmaeker continues her work with the piece.
The Brandenburg Concertos consist of six concerti grossi, in which Bach deploys the instruments from the baroque orchestra in different, often audacious constellations. Against this backdrop, De Keersmaeker sets sixteen dancers originating in different Rosas generations. Following her usual method, and as she did in Rain (after Steve Reich), she approaches the music as if it were a ready-made score for a dance piece, embodying Bach’s polyphonic mastery. The concertos are played live by the baroque ensemble B’Rock, conducted by violinist Amandine Beyer.

All at Naxos send their warmest congratulations to Julian Lloyd Webber following his inclusion in The Queen’s 2021 Birthday Honours List on the 11th of June. The renowned international cellist, conductor, educator and broadcaster received an OBE for his services to Music.
Mr Lloyd Webber has a number of acclaimed albums in the Naxos catalogue, but in 2014 he was obliged to retire from playing the cello due to a neck injury which reduced the power of his bowing arm. In July 2015 he began his 5-year tenure as principal of the UK’s Birmingham Conservatoire, the most recent in a long line of associations with the world of music education. During this time, he collaborated with Naxos to promote some of the conservatoire’s outstanding performers through debut recordings on the label.
Following the announcement of his citation, Mr Lloyd Webber said: ‘I am delighted to receive this special honour. I have been blessed to work with so many wonderful musical collaborators and I want to thank each and every one of them for making this award possible.’
The most recent Netflix hit movie, Zack Snyder’s Army of the Dead, has licensed music from the Naxos recording of Wagner’s Götterdämmerung performed by Hong Kong Philharmonic under Jaap van Zweden. The music featured significantly during the film’s climax.

Following her critically acclaimed debut album on Orfeo in October 2020, trumpeter Selina Ott, winner of the 2018 ARD music competition, presents her second album together with her duo partner, pianist En-Chia Lin. The album features works composed around 1950 that are rarely found in concert programmes and on recordings: Arthur Honegger’s Intrada, the chamber version of Alfred Desenclos’ Incantation, Thrène et Danse – the orchestral version of which appeared on her debut album with the ORF RSO – Swiss composer Heinrich Sutermeister’s Gavotte de Concert, Sergei Vasilenko’s Concert Poème, and Reinhold Glière’s Concerto (in an arrangement for trumpet and piano of the original version for coloratura soprano and orchestra).
‘Yet another brilliant young female trumpeter!... Ott’s playing is superb — technically brilliant, but full of warm expression when needed.’
– MusicWeb International
‘Selina Ott is a fine young trumpet player. Beautiful, committed readings by this orchestra, too.’
– American Record Guide

The ‘Yiruma phenomenon’, which has seen hundreds of millions of album and track sales, stands on the foundations of the South Korean composer/pianist’s 20-year career, which includes film music and sell-out tours throughout Asia, Europe and the US. Performed by the award-winning virtuoso Giacomo Scinardo, this programme features pieces from a variety of Yiruma’s albums and soundtracks. These include the global hit River Flows in You and capture the essence of a style that conveys peace and serenity to the listener, from a composer who has declared that he wants his music ‘to be the energy that makes people want to live a better life’.
‘I started to be interested in Yiruma’s music during my tour in Asia two years ago: I heard one of his songs for the first time in a train station and I decided to discover more about him. I immediately introduced one of his pieces into my repertoire. I love the simplicity and innocence of his style. His music doesn’t claim to be classical at all cost, I consider his music a union between minimalist, New Age and pop music. For this recording I selected what I believe are the most important and beautiful pieces. This is my personal Best of Yiruma compilation.’ – Giacomo Scinardo
Following the success of his latest album of Beethoven’s piano sonatas, award-winning pianist Kotaro Fukuma presents a new recording featuring piano transcriptions of Bach’s music, including his arrangement of an aria from the St Matthew Passion.
‘2020 will be remembered in history as the year when the coronavirus pandemic swept around the globe and people faced unprecedented challenges. In my case, numerous concerts were cancelled or postponed, and it was an anxious time that I’d not experienced previously as a musician. During the prolonged ‘stay at home’ period, I attempted various online projects, such as streaming concerts, in the hope of keeping the arts going.
On one occasion, I asked via social media what kind of piano music people wanted to hear most, and a large number answered the music of J.S. Bach. Strangely enough, I also felt at the time that I wanted to play Bach. This is probably not a coincidence, but it’s more that Bach’s music has healing power.’ – Kotaro Fukuma
