Prophone is a high-quality independent label focusing on jazz with a touch of Sweden. It was founded by Erland Boëthius, the son of Proprius’ founder Jacob Boëthius. The label shares Proprius’ reputation as an ‘audiophile label’. Since its inception in 1990, many internationally renowned artists have contributed to its catalogue: Esbjörn Svensson, Alice Babs, Jacob Karlzon, Rigmor Gustafsson, Steve Dobrogosz and Jeanette Lindström, to name a few.
When “Jazzparaden” is performed live, the musicians of the Bohuslän Big Band enter a school playground or a concert venue and surprise the audience. Through swinging New Orleans music, the audience gets to learn about the different instruments in a brass band. The repertoire can accommodate everything, from festival melodies to children's songs and well-known jazz classics; the full complement of a brass band performs in a completely different way from usual. The album contains a selection of these popular songs in arrangements by the musicians of the Bohuslän Big Band.
After 20 years apart, Anna Lundqvist (vocals) and Jonas André (piano) reunited to try and revive their musical partnership. On Reunion, the duo displays a mix of original compositions especially written for the album, alongside personal interpretations of some hidden gems from the world of pop and jazz. The result is an album steeped in Nordic melancholy that tells lyrical and bittersweet stories of love and lust, life and longing.
Simon Westman grew up in Sundsvall, in northern Sweden. In 2000 he entered the Gothenburg University of Music and began his jazz piano studies with Anders Persson, among others. After graduating in 2005, Simon continued his jazz piano studies at the Cologne University of Music in Germany, where he was privileged to have the British jazz pianist John Taylor as his teacher. In 2010 Simon began playing in a piano trio with bassist Magnus Bergström and drummer Magnus Gran. They played mostly at jazz clubs in Gothenburg and were praised for their sound. The music they performed was a mixture of Swedish folk music, European contemporary music and American jazz standards. In the spring of 2019, Simon began to compose original music for the trio, and in January 2020 they recorded their debut album Stay a while, at Nilento Studio in Kållered, Gothenburg.
Eva Kruse was born in 1978 in Hamburg, Germany. From 1998 to 2003 she studied acoustic bass and improvisation at the Berlin University of the Arts (UdK Berlin) with teachers Sigi Busch, Jerry Granelli and David Friedman. She also went to Sweden to study with bassist Professor Anders Jormin in Göteborg. From 1999 to 2001 she was a member of the German youth jazz orchestra BuJazzO, where she took classes with pianist John Taylor who inspired her to start composing for different bands and projects.
In 2002 she founded her own band with pianist Michael Wollny and drummer Eric Schaefer, and the ensemble [em] later became a highly acknowledged trio. Eva has released five albums and toured worldwide over the last ten years with [em]. The trio has won two ECHO Jazz awards as Best National Ensemble in 2011 and 2013.
Kruse has worked with bands on other projects, including Firomanum, the Arne Jansen Trio and the Berlin-based groovecollective SOAP. Eva Kruse is a well-known guest at the JazzBaltica Festival in Schleswig-Holstein (Northern Germany), where she appeared in the festival opening concerts for several years, as well as in Europe-wide broadcast concerts with [em], Firomanum, SOAP, saxophonist Bunky Green and the JazzBaltica Ensemble. At JazzBaltica she met the Swedish trombonist Nils Landgren who invited her to join various projects.
In 2012 Eva Kruse founded her own new project In Water with oboist Tjadina Würdinger, saxophonist Uwe Steinmetz, pianist Bugge Wesseltoft and drummer Christian Jormin. The album In Water was released in September 2014. Their second album On the Mo was released in 2016. The two recordings brought her the ECHO Jazz award as Bassist of the Year in 2015 and 2017 respectively.
In 2017 Eva Kruse and Peter Liljeqvist initiated a music/integration project with young refugees. In 2018 this project became the Hip-Hop band Projektet Fri (projektetfri.se). Several singles have been released on Spotify and YouTube, as well as live concerts around Sweden.
Eva Kruse’s new album New Legend was recorded at Svenska Grammofonstudion, Gothenburg in March 2020 with Tjadina Wake-Walker (oboe), Uwe Steinmetz (alto & soprano saxophones), Christian Jormin (piano) and Eric Schaefer (drums).
The title of the album, New Legend can be translated as 'new story'. Kruse´s written material reflects her private everyday surroundings and all that comes with it, including political and social movements. ‘With my music I tell stories about different themes in my life that lie close to my heart. For example, these last couple of years we’ve had two refugees in our home. Trying to create a platform from which one theoretically could build a future has been an inner journey of hope, fear, love and despair. Both musically and politically, I’ve got a lot to say nowadays.’’ – Eva Kruse

Adolphe Adam’s Le Postillon de Lonjumeau was a great success at its premiere in 1836 and, along with the ballet Giselle, has remained one of the composer’s most popular works. Following the great French tradition, this opéra-comique has it all: 18th-century Rococo Parisian glamour and a perilous love story involving the dashing and flirtatious Chapelou and his opposite, the powerful and clever Madeleine. This lavish and spectacular production from the Opéra Comique in Paris received widespread critical acclaim and features costumes by the iconic French fashion designer Christian Lacroix.
‘Franck Leguérinel’s consummate performance as a comic singer-actor, pop-eyed and mustachioed like Groucho Mark, leading the action forward throughout the evening, was outstanding. But it was soon clear that Michael Spyres is also an excellent comedian, and his vocal virtuosity is such that he can afford to play with it almost self-mockingly, throwing in extra Ds (or higher?) with a wink and a grin.’ – Classical Voice North American

My First Classical Music Book is a colourful introduction to classical music, designed to fire the imagination of children aged 5–7 years. Readers are asked to think about the different places in which we might hear music. Then, each of the major composers and musical instrument families are introduced and brought to life in a vivid and enchanting way.
My First Orchestra Book features a special guide – a little green creature called Tormod. He is a troll who has come all the way from the top of a mountain in Norway to discover music. As he searches for the music that will help him to find his way home, readers learn about the different instruments.
The ‘My First’ album series is an excellent springboard for a lifelong journey through classical music. The tracks will appeal and engage a younger audience, and the colourful booklets contain information on every piece. It is perfect for children learning an instrument, or for those who love to dance to traditional classical music.
The ‘Children’s Classics’ series presents narrated versions of timeless family classics. Prokofiev’s famous Peter and the Wolf is narrated by Dame Edna Everage, the fantastical Carnival of the Animals is brought to life by Johnny Morris, 1001 Nights is narrated by Bernard Cribbins, and Shakespeare’s timeless love story Romeo and Juliet is told by June Whitfield.
The madrigal, written for courts and patrons, was the ultimate secular song. The genre reached its zenith with the works of Claudio Monteverdi in successive books that trace his technical and expressive innovations. In them, Monteverdi explored themes such as the vicissitudes and pleasures of love, as well as the art of war, and the pain of loss. The editions used in these recordings are the most authentic and uncut, and, in keeping with 17th-century practice, employ male voices only. Praised as ‘compelling, simultaneously controlled and imaginative’ (American Record Guide) the collection also includes pieces never before recorded.
Italian early music ensemble Delitiæ Musicæ was established in 1992. Its significant recording projects include Verdelot’s Missa Philomena praevia and four widely acclaimed albums dedicated to Masses by Palestrina. Other projects include collections of the complete madrigals of both Monteverdi and Gesualdo, both released on Naxos. The unconventional, yet impassioned interpretations by Delitiæ Musicæ and Marco Longhini are seen as an important regeneration of Italian Renaissance and Baroque music.
Celebrating the 250th anniversary of Beethoven’s birth
In celebration of Beethoven’s 250th birth year, we have curated a special Celebrate Beethoven playlist which is refreshed monthly according to various interesting themes based on his life, compositional periods, genre, and more. The tracks are sourced from the Naxos Complete Beethoven Edition, a new 90-disc boxed set also released to mark the anniversary year, hailed by the critics or being the most comprehensive set available.
This month we focus on his music for VOCAL WORKS.
Ludwig van Beethoven was one of the most influential composers in the history of Western music, but his songs have inevitably been overshadowed by his great orchestral, chamber and solo works. The art song was yet to be redefined by Schubert when Beethoven was setting the words of Goethe and other great poets, expressing the pain of unrequited or unfulfilled love in songs and arias sung in Italian as well as German. Beethoven’s sensitive touch was also perfect for new accompaniments to Scottish, Welsh and Irish folksongs, and this collection is a rare opportunity to hear the more intimate side of this iconic composer’s output.
Follow the Celebrate Beethoven playlist on your favourite streaming platform to discover a wide range of works from one of the most influential composers in the history of classical music.

This CELEBRATE BEETHOVEN catalogue contains an impressive collection of works by this master composer across the Naxos Music Group labels.
Boris Giltburg has set out to learn and film all 32 piano sonatas by Beethoven by the end of 2020. The project started as a personal exploration, driven by curiosity and his strong love of the Beethoven sonatas, and the recordings presented in this initial volume display Giltburg’s customary spirit, technical finesse and convey the electric atmosphere of the live recording.
One of the least explored areas of Beethoven’s compositions is the miscellaneous sequence of canons, early exercises in counterpoint, mature jokes and jeux d’esprit that he wrote over many years. He composed a two-part canon for the composer Hummel in 1816 and in 1823 one for four voices (written in a tavern) for Count Lichnowsky. He also wrote birthday and Christmas greetings for colleagues and friends, and songs that punned on recipients’ names or poked fun at them.
Beethoven’s monumental contribution to Western classical music is celebrated here in this definitive collection marking the 250th anniversary of the composer’s birth. Surveying the totality of his career and achievement, the Complete Edition spans orchestral, concerto, keyboard, chamber, music for the stage, choral and vocal works, encompassing his most familiar and iconic masterpieces, alongside rarities and recently reconstructed fragments and sketches in world premiere recordings.
Visit and bookmark the mini-site for this release, which will be regularly updated.

The fifth Naxos recording of works by Kenneth Fuchs with the London Symphony Orchestra, conducted by JoAnn Falletta (8.559824), won the GRAMMY Award in 2018 for Best Classical Compendium. This new album reveals his mastery of the band medium and features the exceptional United States Coast Guard Band, in definitive performances of seven works for symphonic winds by one of America’s leading composers.
Kenneth Fuchs has written music for orchestra, band, voice, chorus, and various chamber ensembles. This is the first Naxos disc that features Fuchs’ works for wind band, which also includes the alto saxophone concerto Rush in a new version for band (world premiere recording).

The composer Alexander Nikolayevich Scriabin was a controversial figure: his original and innovative works are cloaked in spiritualism and mysticism, and inspired by a synaesthetic concept of art. Although it is not yet fully recognised, the Russian musician made a crucial contribution to the evolution of 20th-century musical language; his ten piano sonatas are noteworthy both for their aesthetic value and historical importance.
‘Music represents for me a journey to the core of my own self, a journey that will only end with my last day. Music strips us of our pettiness, leaving us bare and clean. It is our primary duty to leave behind any vanity or showing-off when we approach it. Only then can we hope to be worthy of it. Because music should not be exploited, indeed, we must become its heralds.’
This declaration of poetic, spiritual and existential intent is how the pianist Nuccio Trotta approaches music, which is for him a source of life. His repertoire ranges from the earliest piano music to that of the 1900s. He obtained a diploma from the Conservatory of Bari, since when his artistry has met with universal acclaim both in public competitions and in concert performances; throughout, he has been guided by internationally renowned musicians such as the late Aldo Ciccolini.
