The International Tchaikovsky Competition is one of the major events in the international music community and it is held once every four years. This year the competition was held in Moscow and St. Petersburg from June 17 to June 29. Two young and talented artists, who are prize-winners in this year's competition, have previously released recordings on Naxos.
Russian violinist Sergei Dogadin won the first prize in the violin category. His debut recording on Naxos features Shostakovich’s 24 Preludes arranged for violin and piano accompanied by Nikolai Tokarev. Fanfare Magazine praised Dogadin’s ‘elegant tone’, and commented that 'the flexibility of their approach mirrors the variability of the music itself.'
20-year-old Japanese pianist Mao Fujita won the 2nd prize in the piano category. Fujita has recorded four albums on the Naxos Japan label. His latest piano solo album 'Passage Chopin: Piano Sonata No. 3' released in 2018, features Chopin's Third Sonata, the piece Fujita performed in the semi-final round of the competition.

Star cellist Daniel Müller-Schott has already built up a sizeable discography in a career spanning sixteen years under the ORFEO record label. In his latest recording, he presents a programme of works by Richard Strauss, featuring Sir Andrew Davis and the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra.
During his long and exceptionally fruitful creative life, Richard Strauss composed but a handful of works for the cello, only three of which survived. Small as that number may seem, they proved critical to the composer’s development. Daniel Müller-Schott sees the early Sonata for Cello and Piano Op. 6 and the late tone poem Don Quixote Op. 35 as marking the path that was to lead Strauss within the space of a few years from late Romanticism to the modern era in music.
The cellist underscores this watershed in Strauss’ artistic development with his own transcriptions, expressly made for this album, of the Lieder Zueignung Op. 10/1 and Ich trage meine Minne Op. 32/1.

Pietro Mascagni’s first and most successful work has become an opera classic, featuring elements of Greek tragedy alongside religious and historical aspects. It’s a story of love, passion, jealousy and restored honour in bloodshed. Directors Luigi Di Gangi and Ugo Giacomazzi set this traditional Cavalleria Rusticana in a Sicilian village of the 1940s where the buildings are rather bare and the piazza is the stage for private as well as public drama. Conductor Valerio Galli leads the Orchestra del Maggio Musicale Fiorentino, one of the finest in Italy.
‘Elena Zilio is a well-centred and engaging Mamma Lucia, with a magnetic stage presence and an incredible expressive talent… Marina Ogii is a Lola imbued with charm and sensuality, with a warm and skilfully projected voice… Lorenzo Fratini directs the chorus which provides excellent and powerful contributions to the performance.’ – connessiallopera.it

Ludwig van Beethoven was commissioned by the dancer and choreographer Salvatore Viganò to write the ballet The Creatures of Prometheus – an allegorical story based on the myth of Prometheus – and the composer’s piano version of the orchestral score was published not long after its premiere in 1801. Beethoven turned his symphonic style and skill in pictorial representation to conjure scenes of stormy excitement alongside elegant dances and the sublime aura of beauty surrounding the legendary musicians Orpheus, Amphion and Arion. The Finale is crowned by a theme that would later be used in the ‘Eroica’ Symphony.
‘Playing any of Beethoven’s 32 piano sonatas or 5 piano concerti – each and every one of them a masterpiece in its own right – reaps unparalleled pleasure, but is almost taken for granted. More adventurous souls may explore his symphonies through Lisztʼs transcriptions; but when this project of recording Beethoven’s own piano transcription of The Creatures of Prometheus, Op. 43 came about, the initial sense of curiosity quickly turned to one of deep satisfaction. The transcription not only afforded me a glimpse into Beethoven’s only large-scale ballet score, but also a taste of his lighter, happier side. The connotation of a transcriptions does not do full justice to this work which is wonderfully crafted for the instrument Beethoven dearly loved.’ – Warren Lee

Established by an Act of Congress in 1798, the United States Marine Band is America’s oldest continuously active professional musical organization. Its mission is to provide music for the President of the United States and the Commandant of the Marine Corps. President John Adams invited the Marine Band to make its White House debut on New Year’s Day, 1801, in the then-unfinished Executive Mansion. In March of that year, the band performed for Thomas Jefferson’s inauguration and is believed to have performed for every presidential inaugural since. An accomplished musician himself, Jefferson is credited with giving the Marine Bane its title, ‘The President’s Own’.
Whether performing for State Dinners or South Lawn arrivals, events of national significance, or receptions, Marine Band musicians appear at the White House an average of 200 times each year. Every fall, the Marine Band performs throughout a portion of the continental United States during its concert tour, a tradition initiated in 1891 by ‘The March King’ John Philip Sousa, who was the band’s legendary 17th Director from 1880–92.
While the Marine Band is firmly dedicated to preserving the musical traditions established over its long history, it is equally committed to serving as a leading ensemble in the development of new repertoire for winds. In recent years, ‘The President’s Own’ has commissioned David Rakowksi’s Ten of a Kin (Symphony No. 2), Scamp by Pulitzer prize-winning composer Melinda Wagner, and Flourishes and Meditations on a Renaissance Theme by Michael Gandolfi. Additionally, the band has premiered works by composers such as Scott Lindroth, James Stephenson, Gerard Schwarz, Jacob Bancks, and Laurence Bitensky. “The President’s Own” also continues to attract prominent guest conductors to its podium including Osmo Vänskä, Leonard Slatkin, José Serebrier, Gerard Schwarz, Giancarlo Guerrero, and John Williams.
The President’s Own United States Marine Band in partnership with the All-Star Orchestra under the baton of Gerard Schwarz have won this year’s Emmy® Award in the category for Special Event Coverage (Other than News and Sports). This is the first Emmy® Award for the Marine Band. The awarded show ‘New England Spirit’ is also featured on Naxos' DVD ‘Masterpieces for Symphonic Band’, with a programme of works by William Schumann, Vincent Persichetti and Sousa.
