In March, cellist Gabriel Schwabe made his Beijing debut and performed Haydn’s Cello Concertos Nos. 1and2 at China’s National Center for the Performing Arts (NCPA) with the NCPA Orchestra. "These two concertos are an important part of any cellist’s repertoire and I have performed them for many years," says Schwabe. The full-house concert was well-received by the Beijing audience.
Schwabe also appeared in two meet-the-artist sessions at the Polyphony music store and the NCPA, when he talked about his latest Saint-Saëns recordings. The following video documents the event:

Hayk Melikyan’s recording of the complete works for piano by Alexander Arutiunian on Grand Piano was recognised as the Best Classical Music Album of the Year by the Ministry of Culture of Armenia. The awards ceremony was held on March 31st at the National Academic Opera and Ballet Theater in Yerevan, Armenia.
“Hayk Melikyan’s playing is spiky, incisive, energetic, clear, and precise… The sound of this recording is spacious, well-balanced, and very realistic.”
– Fanfare
Alexander Arutiunian was one of the most prominent composers in the USSR, one of the representatives of the Armenian ‘Mighty Handful’ and much admired by Shostakovich. An accomplished pianist, Arutiunian created virtuoso piano works that are rooted in Armenian folk traditions while expressing, in the words of Hayk Melikyan, “a rich palette of emotions reflecting both his time and the history of his nation”. From the Armenian Dance of 1935, with its delicate, transparent texture and strong rhythmic drive, via the more dissonant, neo-classical Polyphonic Sonata, the descriptive Musical Pictures, and the almost Debussyan approach to tonality in the Six Moods, to the simple and beautifully crafted Album for Children of 2004, the works on this recording, the first complete edition, span Arutunian’s entire compositional career.
Hayk Melikyan is a prize-winning pianist recognised internationally as one of Armenia’s most versatile and imaginative musicians. In addition to his album of Alexander Arutiunian’s complete piano works, he has also recorded the complete original works for piano solo by Arno Babadjanian, which appeared on Fanfare’s ‘Want List’, the performances described as having “power and agility to spare, with plenty of attention to inner voicings.”

On April 5th, BBC Music Magazine announced the list of winners for its annual awards at Kings Place in London. Among the winners was Ondine’s album of late works by Elliott Carter which received the Premiere Jury Award.
Released in August 2017, the album includes five premiere recordings, including Carter’s final work Epigrams (2012) for piano trio, featuring Pierre-Laurent Aimard, Isabelle Faust and Jean-Guihen Queyras. The disc also features percussionist Colin Currie with the Birmingham Contemporary Music Group, and the BBC Symphony Orchestra conducted by Oliver Knussen.
“There couldn't be a better tribute to Elliott Carter than this recording, featuring five premieres and an all-star line-up of performers. It's a dazzling showcase of the American composer's late music.
It would be hard to ask for better performances. Pianist Pierre-Laurent Aimard is fiery yet delicate, well matched by percussionist Colin Currie. There's virtuosity aplenty from the BBC Symphony Orchestra and Birmingham Contemporary Music Group under Oliver Knussen, and with the piano trio, Epigrams, Aimard, violinist Isabelle Faust and cellist Jean-Guihen Queyras sign off in impeccable style.” – BBC Magazine

Featuring 10 premiere recordings and a number of recently discovered ‘Sins of Old Age’ manuscripts unassigned to specific volumes, pianist Alessandro Marangoni’s latest installment to the complete cycle of Rossini’s Péchés de vieillesse brings together a notable diversity of genres and instrumentation. They include the catchy Allegretto for violin and piano that Rossini used as his musical calling card, the Tarantelle pur sang for choir, harmonium, clochette and piano, and a harmonisation of the simple folk melody Marlbrough s’en va-t-en guerre that transforms it ‘into a little musical gem’.
Leading soloists involved with this recording include violinist Massimo Quarta, cellist Enrico Dindo and baritone Bruno Taddia. Hornist Ugo Favaro, mezzo-soprano Lilly Jørstad, Ars Cantica Choir and conductor Marco Berrini will also be joining Alessandro Marangoni in this album.

TITLES FEATURING PETER WICKHAM
The Story of My Life is the explosive and exhilarating autobiography by the infamous libertine Giacomo Casanova. Intense and scandalous, Casanova’s extraordinary adventures take the listener on an incredible voyage across 18th-century Europe – from France to Russia, Poland to Spain and Turkey to Germany, with Venice at their heart. He falls madly in love, has wild flings and delirious orgies, and encounters some of the most brilliant figures of his time, including Catherine the Great, Louis XV and Benjamin Franklin. He holds a verbal duel with Voltaire, a pistol duel with a Polish noble, and finds himself hauled before the court multiple times, including in London, where the judge in question turns out to be none other than Henry Fielding. His appetite for life is voracious; for him, a life lived close to the precipice is the only life worth living.
