- In this DVD, now repackaged and represented at midprice, Mark Minkowski presents a varied programme of well-loved popular pieces and forgotten masterworks by Jacques Offenbach.
- The star of the evening was undoubtedly the Swedish mezzo-soprano Anne Sofie von Otter, one of the most versatile and charismatic singers of her generation.
- Given the success of Offenbach's dramatic works, his numerous pieces of dance music are almost forgotten. However, they too are proof of the composer's talent to invent melodies in abundance.
- This concert also includes the 'Infernal Galop' (Can-Can) from Orphee aux Enfers and the wonderful 'Belle nuit, ô nuit d'amour' (barcarolle) from The Tales of Hoffman.
