GRIEG: Piano Concerto, Op. 16 / CHOPIN: Sonata in B-Flat Minor (Friedman) (1927-1928)
Ignaz Friedman was an immensely creative pianist in his interpretations. He constantly experimented with rubato, accents, phrasing, pauses, and pedal effects. His playing could be extremely elastic or at times quite tight. The less than six hours of his playing captured on electrical recording represent only a fraction of a large performing repertoire. This recording includes Friedman’s only published concerto performance, one by Grieg. The two movements of Chopin’s B flat Sonata, performed with grand gestures, panache and personality typical of Friedman, though made in London, were only issued in Australia thus making them extremely rare.
