The Netherlands Chamber Orchestra employs 39 musicians in an ensemble that can be expanded or reduced according to requirements, a flexibility that allows a wide-ranging repertoire. Until 1994 under the direction of Frans Brüggen, now a permanent guest-conductor, the orchestra is at present under the artistic direction of Ton Koopman and Peter Eötvös, each of whom makes his individual contribution to the work of the ensemble. The orchestra has won an international reputation for its performances of contemporary music, in addition to its distinction in earlier repertoire. As well as festival appearances and concerts at home and abroad, the Netherlands Radio Chamber Orchestra has earned a reputation in the recording studio and is a notable champion of Dutch music. The orchestra is one of five major musical ensembles under the aegis of the Music Centre of the Netherlands Radio and Television, supervised by Edo de Waart.
