Stjepan Sulek (1914-1986)
Stjepan Sulek was born in Yugoslavia in 1914, and was best known as the conductor who, in a busy career, created the present Zagreb Radio Chamber Orchestra. As a composer he worked in most genres, but was particularly prolific in the field of orchestral composition, including six symphonies. He remained a melodic composer, often looking back to previous eras, including Baroque music. His most notable work was the Violin Concerto that at one time enjoyed some international success. Though well known in his own country, little of his music is played elsewhere.
